Short Plays

The short play reading series have become an annual event at the Abbey Theatre.

The short play reading commissions have become an important milestone in a playwright’s developing relationship with the Abbey Theatre.

Our Literary Department invites emerging playwrights to create a twenty minute play for two actors inspired by a given theme.

A rehearsed reading of these plays takes place at the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage over two nights, in what has become a hotly anticipated event in the Abbey Theatre calendar. We will be announcing a new series of short plays for 2016 very soon.

Since their inception in 2008, the short play commissions have introduced twenty-five new short plays by emerging Irish voices to our audiences. They include:
