Interspaces – Artist Talk with Christos Papadopoulos

Saturday, 9 May at 2pm | At the Abbey Theatre

Join Christos Papadopoulos for an engaging conversation as he returns to Dublin with the Irish premiere of My Fierce Ignorant Step at the Abbey Theatre.

Known for his precise, mesmerising movement language, Papadopoulos has captivated festival audiences before with Elvedon in 2017 and Ion in 2018. In this discussion, he will reflect on his influences, his choreographic path within the international dance scene, and the thinking behind this deeply personal new work. Discover how rhythm, breath and collective energy shape a piece that pulses with optimism and the thrill of new beginnings, and gain insight into the process behind its creation.

Greek choreographer, Christos Papadopoulos studied dance and choreography at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam, theatre at Greece’s National Theatre Drama School, and political sciences in Athens. His work explores the universal patterns of change and the monumental shifts occurring around the world. The choreographer’s first works, Opus and Elvedon, were chosen by Aerowaves and toured extensively in 2016 and 2018.

The choreographer has since created works for the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), Lyon Opera Ballet and the Biennale de la Danse de Lyon. Papadopoulos was named as the winner of the inaugural Rose International Dance Prize (Sadler’s Wells, London) for his haunting production, LARSEN C.

Interspaces – Artist Talk with Emma Martin

Saturday, 16 May at 2pm | At the Abbey Theatre

Join leading choreographer Emma Martin for an engaging conversation as she reflects on her uncompromising and innovative practice. From her early training in ballet to creating striking multidisciplinary work across dance, theatre and opera, Emma has carved out a singular voice in Irish performance, creating highly visual dance works which are instinctively human.

She returns to the festival following the major success of Night Dances at DDF2024, and now unveils the world premiere of her new work Soft God. Hear about the ideas, explorations and decisions shaping this latest creation, and gain insight into the journey behind the work as it meets the stage for the first time.

Emma Martin started out as a ballet dancer. She creates multidisciplinary work that has spilled into film, installation, opera and theatre. She graduated from the John Cranko School in Stuttgart, and has a BA in Russian and Drama & Theatre Studies from Trinity College Dublin.

As a choreographer, Martin made her first show in 2010 and has now produced work through her company United Fall since 2018. Her previous performance works include King/Shrine, Night Dances, Birdboy, Orfeo ed Euridice, Girl Song, Dancehall and Tundra. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally, touring throughout Europe and the UK. DDF first presented Martin’s work with Tundra in 2014. DDF & the Abbey Theatre presented Night Dances in 2024.
