The Irish Society of Performance Designers (ISPD), in partnership with the Abbey Theatre, are pleased to announce an Open Call for an early-career Costume Designer.

The successful candidate will work on the Abbey’s upcoming production of The Whiteheaded Boy, written by Lennox Robinson and directed by Annie Ryan.

The selected candidate will work under the mentorship of Costume Designer Sinéad Cuthbert and engage with the wider creative team to design the show and deliver it to the national stage. This will involve sessions with the designer, and attending production and design meetings, and rehearsals.

Running from Wednesday, 3rd June – Saturday, 18th July, The Whiteheaded Boy is a raucous, high-stakes tug-of-war between a generation who will do anything to keep their standing in a small Irish town town and the young, who just want to be free to do what they want to do.

The deadline for applications is Sunday, 22nd March 2026 at 4 pm. Interviews with selected candidates will take place later in March. For more information, and to apply, click here.

This initiative is funded by The Arts Council Arts Grant Funding 2026.
