"His cheek bones so beautiful I have to close my eyes in case he blinds me”

In this world premiere, written by Frank McGuinness and performed by Ryan Donaldson, a young man relives his time enclosed in captivity, following the breakdown of his family.

Diving into his memories, he explores the forces of faith, power and money that dominate the stark and unsettling confinement which “offered a choice of testaments, Old and New’. Called Gomorrah by the residents, not everything is as it seems in this place supposed to stand for ‘cleanliness, order, industrious living’.

Combining violence, control and desire, Gomorrah is a mirror to the strangeness and contradictions of 1970s Ulster, and our narrator must find a way out of both to make peace with the past and make his own way in the world.

Commenting on the play, director Sarah Baxter says ‘I’m excited to be directing the world premiere production of Do You Come From Gomorrah? by Frank McGuinness – it’s always an honour to work on the premiere of a new play and a responsibility I take on joyfully. Ryan Donaldson has a brilliant understanding of Frank’s writing, and I can’t wait for audiences to see him bring this complex, beautiful story to life.’

This is the opportunity to witness a world premiere by Frank McGuinness, an acclaimed Irish playwright and poet, widely regarded as one of the most important voices in contemporary Irish theatre.
