Would you like to become the next Resident Assistant Director at the Abbey Theatre?

The only full-time, paid position of its kind in Irish theatre, this is an invaluable opportunity to gain experience working at the heart of the Abbey Theatre. We produce a year round programme of plays, public readings, workshops and artistic development work.

At the Abbey Theatre we are committed to nurturing young theatre makers in all areas of theatre including directors, playwrights, actors and designers. Since its inception in 2007 the role of Resident Assistant Director has been held by established theatre directors such as Wayne Jordan, Louise Lowe, Oonagh Murphy and Maisie Lee. The successful candidate will be mentored by Fiach Mac Conghail, Director of the Abbey Theatre.

The Resident Assistant Director will work on a number of Abbey Theatre productions from inception to stage. They will collaborate on other strands of the theatre’s artistic development work including involvement in rehearsed readings, workshops of plays in progress and other projects. They will establish working relationships with a host of peers in the theatre community.

The Resident Assistant Director Scheme is made possible thanks to the generous funding of the Lennox Robinson Estate, a fund bequeathed by former board member of the Abbey Theatre, Lennox Robinson.

This is a unique opportunity to work within a thriving creative environment and to experience all aspects of theatre in action. The Abbey Theatre’s Resident Assistant Director will work alongside renowned directors and the best actors in the industry. They will also collaborate with colleagues involved in dramaturgy, stage management, production, lighting and sound, casting, costume, voice direction, education, communications and customer service activities at the Abbey Theatre.
