Ireland 2016 All-Island Primary Schools Drama Competition


The Abbey Theatre and RTÉ, in collaboration with the Department of Education and Skills, are running an exciting competition to encourage Irish primary school children to make their unique contribution to Ireland 2016.

We are asking primary schools around Ireland to write their own short play for the Abbey stage. This is an opportunity for all you budding playwrights to show off your imagination and creativity. Create your own characters and plot to tell your story of 1916 in a brand new play.

Competition details

Primary school children are invited to write a short play (up to 10 minutes duration) based on the events of 1916.

The Abbey Theatre and RTÉ will provide video resources for teachers and pupils which will be available online at

RTÉ Swipe TV will announce the competition on their programme on Wednesday 14 October 2015.

Entry criteria

The play can be:

• an historical or fictional work

• in any genre (i.e. comedy, adventure, action, tragedy)

• based on any social, cultural, military or political aspect of the events of 1916 including the Easter Rising or WW1

• local, national or international in its focus

• written and performed in English or as Gaeilge

Submission date & other key dates

Participating primary schools are asked to submit a 60 second filmed extract of the play, along with a written synopsis (max 300 words), to RTÉ’s Swipe TV by Sunday 20 December 2015 at 5.00 pm.

Entries will be viewed by a panel of experts from stage and television.

Shortlisted entries will be announced and made available on RTÉ’s Swipe TV. Public voting will take place from 1-15 February 2016 via RTÉ.

The lucky winner will be announced on Friday 4 March 2016.

The overall winner will perform their drama to friends and family on the Abbey stage in Spring 2016. Prior to the performance, the winning class will also receive a day’s coaching from the Abbey Theatre. The winning play will be filmed by RTÉ for broadcast on Swipe TV.
