Now regarded as a masterpiece, The Plough and the Stars is one of the plays most closely associated with the Abbey Theatre.
Set in a tenement house, against the backdrop of the Easter Rising in 1916, The Plough and the Stars is both an intimate play about the lives of ordinary people and an epic play about ideals and the birth of our nation.
Amidst the tumult of political upheaval, Jack and Nora Clitheroe are ‘like two turtle doves always billing and cooing’, much to the ridicule of their bustling neighbours. But when Ireland calls, Jack must choose between love for his wife and duty to his country.
Heartbreaking, disturbing and very funny, The Plough and the Stars is an historic play that every generation needs to see. At this time of national crisis, when the principles and ideals of the proclamation and the founding of the Republic are, more-than-ever, under consideration, it is an important play for the Abbey Theatre to present once again.
Director Wayne Jordan brings the fresh perspective of a new generation to this iconic play.

This is fantastic, enjoyed it so much. Wayne Jordon had a fresh style, well directed, the transition between sets was genius, like they were the hard working tenemant people. A fine ensemble piece.Joe Hanley and Cathy Belton,Kathy Rose O Brien overplayed for the laughs at times which lost the truth, but succeeded in entertaining. Denise Gough made a strong Nora, outstanding performance, Laurnace Kinlan and Frankie McClafferty balanced both the darkness and the humour. The two I noticed were Ciaran O Brien, great understated grasp of the situation as a english solider, and a fine performance of little Mollser, Emma eliza Regan embraced a solemn reality, just really truthful. The cast deserved the standing ovation which they received, this is the best piece of theatre Ireland has produced in a long time.

I thoroughly enjoyed Thursdays nights performance. I have seen quite a few productions of this show and this was without doubt the best. Casting was superb. My only criticism would be that i though it was played for laughs than the actual truth of it most of the time. Fluther was acting for laughs on almost every line which i didn’t think was very fair on the rest of the cast. Mrs Gogan, Nora, The Covey and Uncle Peter were all brilliant in their respective roles. The Rosie character seemed like she was in another play, all her acting was done to the audience. Overall, it was a great night. Congratulations to the Abbey and the Director. Gerry

Hello again, I sent my review yesterday, left out the stars in my excitement. Defnitely five stars and a golden plough to boot. First-rate theatrical experience.

This was quite possibly the best play I have ever seen. I was absolutely bowled over. I was visiting Dublin (I’m Irish) and just happened to get off the bus near the Abbey and see it was on and went impromptu on 30th August. I had seen it when very young, and thought, maybe I’ll understand it better this time.
I certainly did! It is a fabulous masterpiece, rich in the paradoxes of human nature and human history. Perfect comedy in the the first half, perfect tragedy in the second. Poetry throughout. Wonderful performances all round and a beautiful production.Congratulations to Mr Jordan all actors but the highest tribute has to go to Mr O’Casey.

Went to see Plough and The Stars Saturday 4th September. Enjoyed the production, thought the cast were great, however, the set in parts was disapponting. Also, I thought it was inconceiveable that our National Theatre ahd no programmes on the night we attended which certainly took from the enjoyment of the night.

My fiance and I attended this fantastic play on 24th August and it did not disappoint! Having studied the play and many of O’Casey’s plays at University it was real pleasure to see it on stage. The pace was swift, scene changes were smooth and creative and the acting was both professional and impressive! A fantastic production!!

My husband persuaded his rather reluctant wife to go and see this production. I am so glad he did.
This play was the best I have ever seen.
I laughed and cried in equal measure, and done something I have never done before -
recommended everyone I know to go and see it.
Brilliant (especially Nora).

Really enjoyed this production. Played for comic effect in the early stages, in traditional Dublin fashion, so it came across to me as more realistic. Well acted and the set was stunning. I loved the approach to the scene changes, particularly as they stayed in character with Nora moving the ‘good’ stuff and poor Mollser too weak to carry anything off. Nora’s slightly dodgy accent was about the only thing that jarred, but only slightly.
Congratulations to all concerned on a tremendous production of a Dublin classic.
