Shakespeare in Music

Ireland’s national theatre and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra join forces for two performances celebrating the works of William Shakespeare with words and music

Shakespeare in Music presents the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Maloney, performing excerpts from orchestral works by composers including Sibelius, Prokofiev, Berlioz and Mendelssohn.

Abbey Theatre actors, directed by Wayne Jordan will recite some well-known monologues from plays that inspired this music such as Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream among others.

The works of William Shakespeare have been brought to life on the Abbey stage since King Lear was first performed in 1928. Shakespeare in Music brings together Shakespeare’s words and the music which they inspired.
