‘No Escape’ is like a baptism by immersion. The art that graces the presentation is deeply challenging yet somehow uplifting. Understated, it admits us to core secrets of these darkest stories insofar as any outsider can reach into the pain, hurt and brutality suffered by another.
It reveals something of the life-long burden of those whose story it is. Unremitting in pointing to the systems that failed them - the department of education and the religious orders - it involves all of us who walked this land at that time, unseeing.
It highlights the plight of Sister Helena O’Donoghue, and other religious leaders whose lives were diverted into dealing with shocking things that happened before they took up office. Early on, it indicates that an adversarial approach could never heal this pain. The juxtaposition of moral and criminal responsibility is rightly emphasized.
These artists guide us into a dark cave which must be fully explored before we can venture on any future journey.
