A sudden shock, and a man’s life flashes before his eyes. In an intense rush of extraordinary images and tangled memories, he attempts to reconnect the events that have shaped him.

The Corn Exchange make their Abbey main stage debut with this humorous and compassionate study of an ordinary life.

Freefall was a hit in its premiere run in the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival 2009 and went on to win Best Director and Best New Play at the Irish Times Theatre Awards.

‘Comically surreal and poignant… a courageous and innovative piece’
Irish Independent

‘A sophisticated idea that becomes fully embodied through the warmth and poignancy of the writing, and through the humanity of the performers. Freefall might just mark the day when Irish writing grew up.’
Herald HQ

I felt it renewed my faith in an important purpose of theatre to link its audience with itself, the others in the audience and the wider community in an embrace of empathy that is sustainable by the images created in our imaginations. What a gift to have such writers directors and performers in Ireland. The 100 or so students who attended tonight were deeply engaged.

‘Freefall’ - I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like that. The closest description I can come up with is that the actors pulled me out of the reality, lifted high up above usual level of sensibility into some parallel dimension where words like ‘emotions’, ‘feeling moved’, ‘sensitivity’ acquire a new meaning.

Superb acting, unbelievably good set design, lights, sound and music, every single detail carefully worked out. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant performance!

It left me speechless for good half an hour. I believe I’m a different person that I was this morning.

Thank you very much.
