Following its sell out success earlier this year, we are delighted to welcome Ages of the Moon back to the Abbey stage for a limited run.
Byron and Ames are old friends, re-united by mutual desperation. Over bourbon on ice, they sit, reflect and bicker until fifty years of love, friendship and rivalry are put to the test at the barrel of a gun.
Written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Sam Shepard, especially for leading Irish actors Seán McGinley and Stephen Rea, Ages of the Moon is a gruffly poignant and darkly funny play.

What could you expect going to see a play about two old men drinking and sharing memories of their past life while awaiting a pre-dawn eclipse of the moon?
It might at first sound boring, but right there is Sam Shepard’s genius. The audience does not need to be entertained. From the cleverly marked silence and the discussion being paced by mouthfuls of whiskey, the audience is grabbed and snapped up straight away in the two men’s discussion, like invisible witnesses.
The melancholic tone of the play respects the serious subjects of ageing and loss, yet contrasts with some surprising dynamic sketches. It is a real physical performance by the actors-jumping, fighting and a gun is really used!!! We leave the play with a mix of emotions, more than being simply entertained, we become conscious of humanity and its colorful emotions,… a reminder of preciousness of life.
