As part of the digital archive project with NUI Galway, an exhibition of archival material from the Abbey Theatre will open to the public today.

The Performing Ireland 1904 – 2014 exhibition features a selection of digital and physical items from the impressive Abbey Theatre Archive collection, dating from 1894.

Considered to be one of the world’s most significant archival collections, the Abbey Theatre Archive contains over 1 million items relating to Irish theatre, history, culture and society. Some items included in the archive are Lady Gregory’s scrapbooks and the original prompt script from Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars, which survived the Abbey Theatre fire of 1951.

Of the exhibition, Abbey Theatre director Fiach Mac Conghail said ‘in our 110 anniversary year, it is a great occasion to showcase publicly the first digitized items from the Abbey Theatre archive’. Senator Mac Conghail said that he hoped this project would serve to ‘inspire the next generation of theatre makers’. The Performing Ireland 1904 -2014 exhibition will continue until October 2015.
