Six new participants unveiled for the 2012 New Playwrights Programme

~ ‘The New Playwrights Programme at the Abbey Theatre is a unique opportunity for gifted playwrights to immerse themselves in the craft of playwriting’ ~
Aideen Howard, Literary Director at the Abbey Theatre.

Every year the Abbey Theatre selects a set of promising playwrights to participate on the New Playwrights Programme. The programme nurtures and develops their talent through an intensive artist development programme over 18 months.

The Abbey receives up to 350 unsolicited scripts a year and the most promising writers from among these submissions are offered a place. Other emerging playwrights are identified by the Abbey’s Literary Department, who attend a large number of productions, play readings and workshops every year.

The Abbey Theatre is proud to announce the members of the 2012 New Playwrights Programme; Nick Lee, Darren Murphy, Maev MacCoille, Shaun Dunne, John McManus and Paul Kennedy.

Each playwright will write a new full-length play and partake in a series of 20 workshops, talks and masterclasses with leading international theatre practitioners and Abbey writers, directors, actors and designers.

This mix of elements – the frequency and variety of the workshops, the access to leading international theatre artists and the continuous support – makes the New Playwrights Programme the only one of its kind in Ireland.
