The logo used by the Abbey Theatre, Ireland’s national theatre, is based on the original woodcut of Queen Maeve by Elinor Mary Monsell.
Abbey Theatre logo key ring. The keyrings are made of 2mm thick stamped copper, nickel plated with an unpolished finish and hard enamel black colour infill. They measure 50mm x 30mm.
In 1904, the year the Abbey first opened its doors, W.B. Yeats commissioned Elinor to create a wood cut engraving using images from Irish mythology. The image displays the Irish Wolfhound (symbol of Ireland), Queen Maeve and in the right hand corner the symbol of a rising sun. This famous image went on to be used as the Abbey’s logo which continues up to current day.
