Tom Hickey

Tom has worked extensively at the Abbey Theatre since the seventies creating major roles in Irish drama such as The Great Hunger, The Gigli Concert, Give Me Your Answer, Do!, Observe The Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, Misogynist, The Silver Dollar Boys, Portia Coughlan and By the Bog of Cats. In the eighties he played in and collaborated with Tom Mac Intyre and director Patrick Mason on several plays including The Great Hunger (Edinburgh, London, Paris, Moscow, St Petersburg, New York), The Bearded Lady, Rise Up Lovely Sweeney, Dance for Your Daddy and Snow White. He directed Sheep’s Milk on the Boil (Peacock 1994) and Chickadee (Red Kettle 1993). His most recent collaborations with Mac Intyre were What Happened Bridgie Cleary (Peacock and national tour, winner of the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best New Play) and The Gallant John-Joe (Edinburgh, New York and nationwide). Appearances at the Gate Theatre include Heartbreak House, Waiting for Godot, Aristocrats, Three Sisters, Double Dealer, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, London Assurance, Dorian Gray, Great Expectations, Stella by Starlight, Lady Windermere’s Fan, Uncle Vanya and Endgame. UK work includes The Weir (West End), The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other, Juno and the Paycock (National Theatre, London) and Desire Under the Elms (Greenwich Theatre). Films include Flight of the Doves, Cal, To the Western World, Desecration, Gothic, High Spirits, My Left Foot, Nuns on the Run, The Miracle, Raining Stones, Circle of Friends, Gold in the Streets, The Butcher Boy, The Last September, Coney Island Baby, Possession, Headrush, Inside I’m Dancing, Breakfast on Pluto, Garage and Alarm. Tom trained with Deirdre O’Connell at the Stanislavsky Studio and was a co-founder of the Focus Theatre.
