Conor McPherson

Conor McPherson

Conor McPherson was born in Dublin in 1971. He studied Philosophy and English at University College Dublin where he began to write and direct plays, taking a Masters Degree in Philosophy in 1993. Plays include Rum & Vodka, The Good Thief, This Lime Tree Bower, St Nicholas, The Weir (Broadway premiere 1999, Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play), Dublin Carol, Port Authority, Shining City (Broadway premiere 2006, Tony Award nomination for Best Play), and The Seafarer (Broadway premiere 2007, Laurence Olivier and Evening Standard Award nominations for Best Play). Conor has directed many of the premieres of his plays. His production of The Seafarer opened at the National Theatre, London and toured Britain, winning The Manchester Evening News Award for Best Touring Production and a Laurence Olivier Award for his long time collaborator, Jim Norton, before transferring to Broadway. Further awards for his plays include the Stewart Parker Award, George Devine Award, Meyer-Whitworth Award, Evening Standard Award and the Critics’ Circle Award. Work for cinema includes the screenplay for I Went Down, for which he received a Best Screenplay Award from the San Sebastian Film Festival. His first feature film as a director, Saltwater, won the CICAE Award for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival. Further credits as director include the world premiere of Eugene O’Brien’s Eden at the Abbey and West End; Samuel Beckett’s Endgame for the screen starring Sir Michael Gambon and David Thewlis; and Billy Roche’s Poor Beast in the Rain at the Gate. He also conceived TG4’s award-winning series The Running Mate.
