Bernard Farrell

I Do Not Like Thee, Doctor Fell, Bernard Farrell’s first play premiered at the Peacock Theatre in March 1979. It has since been seen, in numerous translations, throughout the world. Since then, he has written twenty-one stage plays, ten of which were premiered at the Abbey Theatre. These include Canaries, All In Favour Said No!, All The Way Back, Kevin’s Bed, The Last Apache Reunion and Lovers at Versailles. He also wrote Stella by Starlight, The Spirit of Annie Ross and Many Happy Returns for the Gate Theatre, Forty-Four Sycamore and Happy Birthday Dear Alice for Red Kettle Theatre Company and for the Laguna Playhouse California he wrote The Verdi Girls. Recently, he wrote Wallace, Balfe and Mr. Bunn for the Gala Reopening of the Theatre Royal Waterford.

His work for television includes Lotty Coyle Loves Buddy Holly (RTÉ) and, with Graham Reid, the eighteen-part series Foreign Bodies for BBC. His radio drama has represented Ireland at the Prix Italia, The Year of Jimmy Somers was named as the BBC’s Play of the Year and RTÉ presented a celebration season of his work in 2002.

Bernard has won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, The Sunday Tribune Comedy of the Year Award, the Best Irish Production Award in the 1996 Dublin Theatre Festival and, in 1998, Kevin’s Bed was nominated as Best Irish Play in the Irish Times/ESB Theatre Awards. He is a member of Aosdana, was Writer-In-Association with the Abbey Theatre and, from 1997 to 2004, served on the Board of Directors of the Abbey Theatre.
