Patrick Mason – Director

Patrick first joined the Abbey Theatre as a director in 1977. He was Artistic Director from 1993 to 1999. His many productions at the Abbey Theatre include The Burial at Thebes by Seamus Heaney, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov in a new version by Tom Murphy, She Stoops to Folly and The Wake by Tom Murphy, Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme and Dolly West’s Kitchen by Frank McGuinness, The Well of the Saints by J.M. Synge, Angels in America by Tony Kushner, The Only True History of Lizzie Finn by Sebastian Barry, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, The Secret Fall of Constance Wilde by Thomas Kilroy, Saint Joan by Bernard Shaw, By the Bog of Cats by Marina Carr, Love in the Title and Da by Hugh Leonard, Wonderful Tennessee by Brian Friel, Jack Be Nimble, Find the Lady, The Great Hunger, The Bearded Lady, Rise up Lovely Sweeney, Dance for your Daddy, Snow White and The Great Hunger by Tom Mac Intyre.

He received a Tony award for Best Director in 1992 for Dancing at Lughnasa.

Other recent productions include Gates of Gold by Frank McGuinness (Gate Theatre), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Arhus Theater, Denmark) and Hecuba (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). His work in opera includes three productions for Wexford Festival, Don Giovanni (Dublin Opera), Don Pasquale (Opera North, ENO, Israeli Opera), Rigoletto (WNO, Opera North), Il Trittico (ENO) and The Makropulos Case (Opera Zuid, the Netherlands).
