The Abbey Theatre announce 2014 winner of Yeats Design Residency

Rebekka Duffy from Athlone, Co. Westmeath is the 2014 winner of the Yeats Design Residency, an innovative partnership between the Abbey Theatre and IT Sligo. This design residency, now in its third year, aims to help nurture the talents of young theatre designers in Ireland.

For this year’s Yeats Design Residency, students of the BA (Hons) in Performing Arts at IT Sligo were asked to create a model set for A Cry from Heaven by Vincent Woods and The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh. Similar to professional set designers, the students were asked to work within a design brief, budget and timeline as part of the project.

In July, Rebekka Duffy takes up a six month set design residency at the Abbey Theatre. Here Rebekka will learn how world-class theatre directors, designers, technical and production staff collaborate at Ireland’s national theatre. She will acquire at first hand an understanding of how set design is incorporated into the process of creating a production.

Students shortlisted for this year’s Yeats Design Residency are Rebekka Duffy, Marsha Fleming, Sonia Norris, Mary Pat Ryan, Rachel Stout, Marie Whelehan and Diarmuid Woods.
