New Playwright Programme Participants Progress

Participants of the New Playwright Programme making great progress.

The New Playwright Programme (NPP) at the Abbey Theatre is in its third year. In this time our Literary Department has nurtured and developed 18 talented emerging playwrights, through an annual intensive eighteen month artist development programme.

We are very pleased to be able to point people in the direction of the work of both past and present participants in the NPP as they make great progress particularly at the 2011 Absolut Fringe Festival.

Grace Dyas (NPP 2010) and the company THEATREclub take Twenty Ten to the Project Arts Centre as well as reprising Heroin in the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival. Louise Melinn (NPP 2010) is one of four writers on the show You Can’t Just Leave, There’s Always Something. Shona McCarthy (NPP 2009) is a co-creator of Heidi and the Bear at The Pearse Centre.

Current members of the NPP at the Fringe Festival are Amy Conroy with Eternal Rising of the Sun at Project Arts Centre and Damian Kearney with The Flamboyant Bird at Smock Alley Theatre. Amy Conroy’s play, I ♥ Alice ♥ I, is also on in the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival.

Outside of the festivals Darren Donohue and Shawn Sturnick (NPP 2010) have just founded a new theatre company, Pandora Theatre, and recently produced their opening show, Out of the Box, in Cleere’s Theatre in Kilkenny.

Congratulations and best wishes to all the particpants of the New Play Programme.
