Macbeth Rehearsals Begin!

Rehearsals of Macbeth by William Shakespeare began on 22 February in the Abbey

The Abbey rehearsal room was abuzz as the new cast, creative team and Abbey staff got together for the first day of rehearsal. After lots of catching up and introductions, this very impressive cast settled down to give an excellent first reading of Macbeth. Both Aidan Kelly who plays Macbeth and Eileen Walsh who plays Lady Macbeth flew in from London and made a welcome return to the Abbey. John Kavanagh plays Duncan, Karl Shiels plays Macduff, Andrea Irvine plays Lady Macduff and Michael McElhatton plays Banquo. The other cast members include Malcolm Adams, Ian-Lloyd Anderson, Charlie Bonner, Robert Donnelly, Gavin Fullam, Grainne Keenan, Phil Kingston, Ronan Leahy, Diarmaid Murtagh, Kate Nic Chonaonaigh, Bríd Ní Neachtain, Rory Nolan and Jason Quinn.

This time around the action shifts to the Irish countryside at the time of Oliver Cromwell. Jimmy spoke about his vision of the play and of his enthusiasm for it. To read more on Jimmy’s views and context for the play, please click here.

Macbeth by William Shakespeare runs from 30 March – 15 May 2010.
