The Evidence I Shall Give
As part of our series The Darkest Corner we have programmed a public reading of Richard Johnson’s play, The Evidence I Shall Give.
The play was actually mentioned in the Report from the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, commonly known as the Ryan Report. First produced in the Peacock in 1961, The Evidence I Shall Give tackles issues surrounding the cover up of child abuse, and demonstrates the awareness of Irish writers at the time that there was something very wrong with the Irish system of institutional care.
For details of the 1961 production, including a full cast list and image of the original programme, visit our Archive.
Other presentations in The Darkest Corner series are No Escape, a piece of documentary theatre based on the findings of the Ryan Report, and James X by Gerard Mannix Flynn.
