Reading Yeats

In 2010 the Literary Department is beginning a process to re-engage with the plays of one of our founders, William Butler Yeats

One of the preeminent figures in the Irish literary canon, Yeats was a founding member of the Abbey Theatre and a playwright whose innovative style revolutionised Irish theatre. His elegant, poetic and stylised plays formed an integral part of the burgeoning Abbey identity.

These plays are strongly intertwined with our history, but we don’t believe that’s where they belong. We want to explore their immediacy by gathering together a group of theatre practitioners and exploring the Yeats repertoire. Through a process of study and research by exciting theatre-makers, we will find fresh and innovative ways to bring these plays to the stage and make them current.

This project will begin in March 2010, with our Yeats Camp, a week where ten theatre practitioners including writers, directors, and sound and lighting designers will meet to begin their discussion on Yeats.

Yeats Camp will be followed by Reading Yeats, where Tom Creed and Wayne Jordan will direct rehearsed readings of Cathleen Ni Houlihan and On Baile’s Strand respectively. We have also invited a different expert to speak each night about their reading of Yeats’ plays and to share their extensive knowledge with our audience.
