The playwrighst who took part in 2010 programme were Louise Melinn, Roisin Coyle, Shawn Sturnick, Elena Bolster, Darren Donohue and Grace Dyas.

The New Playwrights Programme, which was piloted in 2009, is an annual artist development initiative designed to give a number of emerging playwrights a 10 month intensive course in all aspects of writing for the stage. The purpose of the programme is to nurture and cultivate a new wave of playwriting talent for the Abbey Theatre and for Irish Theatre in general. The Programme is co-ordinated by New Playwrights Programme Manager, Bryan Delaney.

The playwrights took part in an intensive programme of 16 specially designed workshops, talks and masterclasses with leading international theatre practitioners on all aspects of writing for the stage. Areas covered will include dramatic structure, characterisation, language and dialogue, writing the first draft, scene structure, revision and rewriting, collaborating with other theatre practitioners etc.

As the central strand of the programme, each participant also undertook to write a new full-length play. Each of these plays was given a workshop and in-house reading in January 2011. The writers had continual access to dramaturgical support from the Literary Department throughout the 10 months as they work on their plays.
