Shakespeare for Teachers

1 Nov 2009 0 Comments

A weekend workshop for post primary teachers who want to find new ways to approach Shakespeare in the classroom. Led by Andrea Ainsworth, Voice Director.

Please not that this event is now sold out.

This practical workshop will allow you to experience the rehearsal techniques used by professional actors and directors. By working as actors with the text, you will discover how language, rhythm and imagery inform character and relationships in Shakespeare’s plays. As well as work on the text, we will also look at some basic acting exercises and rehearsal techniques, e.g. the definition and playing of objectives and actions, and how these techniques are used to animate a scene.

We want to support you as an artist in the classroom by opening up a fuller range of creative approaches to Shakespeare, to enrich your own creativity and inspire your students. We will be using scenes and speeches from Macbeth but this work can be applied to any Shakespeare play.

Andrea Ainsworth has been at the Abbey since 1995 and has worked with countless directors and actors on everything from Shakespeare to new plays by Mark O’Rowe. She was a core tutor on the Professional Actor Training course in Trinity for many years and also gives workshops and classes in voice and text to both professional and non-professionals at the Abbey Theatre.

Shakespeare for Teachers is part of a new Abbey Theatre initiative set up to provide opportunities for training in Shakespeare for a variety of groups including actors, teachers, students and members of the public.
