Frequently Asked Questions about Casting
Below you’ll find some of the most frequently asked questions which we come across day to day.
Who might be considered for roles?
We are dedicated to seeking out new and emerging talent as well as being familiar with a wide range of established actors from across the Irish acting community both at home and abroad.
In addition to this, we also aim to hold at least one round of general auditions each year and endeavour to see as many independent and fringe productions as possible in order to keep adding to the pool of actors with whom we have built relationships.
Also we do accept unsolicited CVs and suggestions for particular roles, all of which are then added to our casting files for reference should any suitable roles arise in the future.
What is a General Audition?
General auditions are held at least once a year and are undertaken by the Casting Department purely to broaden the pool of actors with whom we have a relationship. General auditions are a good opportunity for us to meet with actors who may have just finished their training, those who have been working abroad, those who may simply have been taking some time away from the profession, or actors with which we are not yet familiar.
Throughout the course of the year we accept submissions from those interested in meeting for a general audition, along with a CV and headshot. Once a date has been chosen for general auditions all these submissions are then carefully considered before audition calls are made. While we do try to see as many actors as possible, time and space are limited and it is not always possible to meet everyone who would like to audition.
How can I submit my CV?
You can now submit your most recent theatrical CV and Head shot electronically using our Submit a CV and Headshot facility online. Or you can send a hard copy to us at;
The Casting Department
Abbey Theatre
26 Lower Abbey Street
Dublin 1
When should I submit my CV?
On average the casting process begins at least six months before a show goes into rehearsals. From this point on the Casting Director will meet with the director to discuss casting ideas and establish a creative dialogue. Any CVs received from this point onward will be compiled and considered by both the Casting Department, the director of the production and the writer.
How can I become an actor?
We do not offer instruction here at the Abbey Theatre, however there are a number of different ways to approach becoming an actor in Ireland.
Firstly we recommend that you obtain as much amateur stage experience as possible in local theatre groups or at youth theatre companies, as everything that you do now will be of benefit in your future career. If you are under 21 years of age you may also wish to look at the National Youth Theatre’s website at http://nayd.ie. The National Youth Theatre works with other youth theatres from all over Ireland and annually produces work which is presented here at the Abbey Theatre.
If you are older or decide to pursue further training at this point a good place to start researching different courses is The Irish Theatre Handbook, which can be purchased online at http://www.theatreshop.ie. This contains a list of drama schools and a full list of subsidised and non-subsidised theatres in Ireland as well as details for Irish Actor’s Equity.
