NEW SEASON October 2010 – March 2011

I’m delighted to share with you details of our new season from October until March next year. I am very proud that we will be presenting three world premieres of new Irish plays alongside work that is sure to engage and entertain you.

We start the season with a new play by Carmel Winters. Her play B for Baby (24 Sept – 6 Nov) invites you to rediscover the joy of make-believe. It is exciting to have a new playwright at the Abbey Theatre. It is followed by John Gabriel Borkman, Ibsen’s great drama of love and money, here presented in a new version by Frank McGuinness (6 Oct– 20 Nov). We are thrilled that Lindsay Duncan, Fiona Shaw and Alan Rickman will lead an excellent cast.

I’m very pleased to welcome The Corn Exchange to the Abbey with their superb play Freefall (23 Nov – 4 Dec). I saw this play at last year’s Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival and can heartily recommend it to you. It’s with us for 13 performances only.

Our Christmas show this year is the great comedy Arrah na Pogue by Dion Boucicault (15 Dec – 5 Feb). You might not know the play, but I guarantee that you will enjoy it. It’s a rollicking tale of romance and misadventure – perfect entertainment for all the family.

Another show sure to captivate audiences across all generations will be Raoul (18 – 26 Feb). Its creator, James Thiérrée, is an acrobat, clown, poet and magician; he is one of Europe’s most brilliant circus artists – and the grandson of Charlie Chaplin. This show is a visual treat.

We conclude our season with two new plays by one of Ireland’s most talented theatre artists – Paul Mercier. The Passing and The East Pier are tender and reflective dramas which will be presented in repertory (running over the same period – 11 March to 16 April – on different days). We hope you will take the opportunity to see both plays on our Saturday double bills.

Is mór liom do thacaíocht i gconaí nuair a thagann tú go drámaí ag Amharclann na Mainistreach. I hope that you look forward to these productions and that we welcome you to the Abbey soon.

Booking for our members opens today. General booking by phone and online on Saturday 10 July.

Le gach dea-ghuí,

Fiach Mac Conghail
Director/Stiúrthóir
