Archive

The Archive collects and preserves material of every kind relating to all aspects of the Abbey Theatre and its productions, dating from 1904.

We aspire to making as much of this material as possible available here. As a guide to the rich production history of the theatre, a comprehensive listing of the Abbey repertoire is available for you to search on the Archive homepage.

Hello

I recently completed my BA in English and am currently researching T.S.Eliot’s visit to The Abbey Theatre in 1940 to deliver the inaugural W.B.Yeats Lecture.

Eliot’s invitation issued, presumably, from the Irish Academy of Letters which Yeats and Shaw had been instrumental in forming some years earlier. I have examined The Academy’s Minute Books for the period, which are held at the UCD archives, but they disclosed nothing helpful to my task.

I understand that the Abbey fire in the 1950’s destroyed much of the Archive but I wonder, however, if there is anything in the remaining papers which might throw some light on the matter. If anyone can help or advise me in this matter please email . Many thanks.

Kind Regards

Johnny Naughton

Hello, we are currently researching links between George Shiels and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.  We are hoping to host a George Shiels Festival in the autumn and would be keen to hear from anyone who would be able to shed light on his time in the Abbey.

Alwo would love to hear how Maire is getting on with her research and if she has published her mothers letters yet?  Ballymoney might be a good setting to come for a visit to promote the published works perhaps?
Please email me on
Many thanks
Joanne

I am a BA student currently studying History in NUIM, Im just wishing if there is any information that can be found and related to the events that were occuring onstage during the havoc opening years of the Abbey Theater such as the opening dates of The Plough and the Stars or during Playboy of the Western World.

I am a final year student on the B.A Hons in perfoming arts, in Sligo.
I am currently putting together a research porposal for my dissertation.
My workign title is
Ensemble theatre within Irsh theatre today.

is their any way the Abbey Theatre Archive would have documents/articles that would help as regards to my topic/

The abbey players i know would have worked around an ensemble framwork.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

All the best,

kieron

Hi!
I’m trying to determine the production dates for the Abbey Theatre’s production of THE SOUND OF THE GONG, a comical revue-sical History of the Abbey Theatre, as performed at the Peacock Theatre, written by Fergus Linehan and Tomas Mac Anna. There’s no date in the program itself which I imagine is probably 1960-70s.

Thanks!

Dear Archivist,

I’m a Ph.D. student in UCD on the theatre of Marina Carr and Pirandello. I visited the archive a few times last year with Mairead Lynch and I need to consult with your video material again for my research. Can you please let me know if I can do that and when?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best regards,

Monica

Looking forward to learning the timeline of your productions, as well as actors and the roles they played.

To Bruce Stewart:Thank you so much for your directives re. George Sheils.
Most appreciated Maire Liberace

Hi Bruce,

I just looked up the Google link you refer to which indicates that the Abbey’s site has information on Kevin Casey’s play. This link is actually referring to the Abbey’s previous website which did in fact hold such details. As indicated on this page, the archive pages of the website will be available in the very near future. In the mean time please don’t hesitate to contact the Abbey if you have a question regarding the archive material.

Best wishes,
Jeanette

Hi there Abbey people!

Google says you have some information about Kevin Casey’s play in the linked Abbey archive but you haven’t ... the returned link page says it loud and clear - so what’s going on? A little dementia at the national theatre?

Also, please tell Maire Liberace, above, that Christopher Murrary at Univ. College Dublin is the man to contact about unpublished Shiel letters on account of his edition of the plays.

There’s a holding of information about Shiel and other Irish writers at http://www.ricorso.net which she may want to visit. Other researchers also.

Bruce.

What have you done to your website? It was excellent before, now the typography is weak and bitty.

However, these things can be a question of taste.

But am I missing something - one of the most valuable services you have been providing is full press reviews. Now I find a notice saying “this is an area where you can find press releases.”

In a different section (events?) I can read puffs from reviews selected by one D. McCadden, and a reference to a pdf. Couldn’t find it. Can’t find revies of Rivals either.

Layout of forth-coming events messy (particularly home page).

PS “Irish Times write a piece on our costume department.” How many Irish times is there?

I am doing research on George Sheils and am hoping to be able to have access to you archives especially data regarding play production dates. I have a number of personal letters from George to my mother and am attempting to edit them with a view to possible publication. .

As a young woman I choreographed an adaptation of Lady Gregory"s “Spreading the News” for Siamsa Tire.  I lived in Listowel Co. Kerry.  I worked with a group led by Father Hickey.  The show went well at the Peacock and went on to The Abbey.  I should love to know if there is any memorabilia ...programme etc., still in existence.  I just want to “show off “to my grandchildren!

I now live in France where I write my poetry and dream of Ireland.  Good luck with the website.

Every good wish,

Sheighle Birdthistle.
