Learn more about FOLLOW by WillFredd Theatre

Co-created with Jack Cawley and Shane O’Reilly

In 2010, WillFredd Theatre started working with Composer/Musician Jack Cawley exploring how light and sound can tell a story without text. We soon realised that actor Shane O’ Reilly, who was also a CODA (Child of Deaf Adult), was the ideal addition to this artistic experiment. The journey of FOLLOW began, a show which was to become the first truly integrated piece of theatre in Ireland fully accessible to both a Deaf and hearing audience at the same time.

FOLLOW uses the grammatical structure of ISL (Irish Sign Language). ISL is a perfunctory language of need and want, with little poetry but much beauty in its gesture. It has expressions that we need full phrases to explain. It has signs that we don’t have words to translate. The stories in FOLLOW are representations of the lives of the people we engaged with from the Irish Deaf Community and their families.

The Deaf community are still fighting to have ISL recognised as an official Irish language. Presenting FOLLOW at the national theatre is important for WillFredd both politically and artistically.

We hope you enjoy the show.

Hi Shane,

I was there to see your play ‘FOLLOW’ few years ago. I hope my daughter Carmel and I will go and see your play tomorrow night. I like to know does the play in 2010 same again as this year?

Looking forward to your reply.
