Abbey Theatre Resident Assistant Director Scheme

The Abbey Theatre has an exciting opportunity for a theatre director to join its team as Resident Assistant Director.

The only full-time, paid position of its kind in Irish theatre, this is an invaluable opportunity to gain experience working at the heart of the Abbey Theatre, Ireland’s busiest producing and commissioning theatre.

Since its inception in 2007 the role has been held by established theatre directors such as Wayne Jordan and Oonagh Murphy. The successful candidate will be mentored by Fiach Mac Conghail, Director of the Abbey Theatre.

The Resident Assistant Director Scheme is made possible thanks to the generous funding of the Lennox Robinson Bursary, a fund bequeathed by former board member of the Abbey Theatre, Lennox Robinson.

At the Abbey Theatre we place the artist at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to nurturing young theatre makers from across all disciplines of theatre. We are nurturing new writers through our New Playwrights Programme, an intensive eighteen-month artist development programme with the goal of beginning a long working relationship with a new generation of writers.

The Resident Assistant Director will work on a number of Abbey Theatre productions from inception to stage. They will collaborate on other strands of the theatre’s artistic development work including involvement in rehearsed readings, workshops of plays in progress and other projects. They will establish working relationships with a host of peers in the theatre community including members of the Abbey Theatre’s New Playwrights Programme and the Resident Set Designer (a partnership with IT Sligo).

This is a unique opportunity to work within a thriving creative environment and to experience all aspects of theatre in action. The Abbey Theatre’s Resident Assistant Director will work alongside renowned directors and the best actors in the industry. They will also collaborate with colleagues involved in dramaturgy, stage management, production, lighting and sound, casting, costume, voice direction, education, marketing and promotion and customer service activities at the Abbey Theatre.
