Abbey Theatre purchase of Eden Quay site

Plans for redevelopment on Abbey Street site in future

26 September 2012

The board and management of the Abbey Theatre are pleased to announce the purchase of 15-17 Eden Quay, Dublin 1. The building which is situated adjacent to the current theatre and facing the River Liffey has been purchased with a view to redeveloping the Abbey Theatre on its current site in the future.

Director of the Abbey Theatre, Fiach Mac Conghail said, ‘This is a proud day for the Abbey Theatre and a testament to the vision of our board and my management team. We have purchased this site next door so that we can redevelop, at some point in the future, a new building for the Abbey on our own site.’

Fiach Mac Conghail continued ‘The Abbey Theatre is an iconic building in Dublin city. A theatre has existed on this site since 1834. Taking this opportunity to purchase this site now is a common sense solution to securing the future of the Abbey Theatre.’

Built in 1966, the Abbey Theatre’s current building is inadequate from the point of view of the visitor experience, working conditions for actors and staff, disability access and health and safety standards.

Recently the Abbey Theatre temporarily relocated to the OReilly Theatre, Belvedere, Dublin 1 for a 9 week period from 26 July while works were carried out to remove asbestos which was discovered in the Abbey Theatre auditorium. Funding for these works was provided from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. This work is now completed successfully and this week patrons return to the Abbey to see The Picture of Dorian Gray on the Abbey stage from Thursday, 27 September, as part of this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival.

Abbey Theatre’s current site at 26 Lower Abbey Street

In September 1963, President of Ireland, Éamon de Valera laid the foundation stone to the Abbey Theatre on its current site at 26 Lower Abbey Street, at the corner of Marlborough Street and Lower Abbey Street. This new Abbey building, designed by Irish architect Michael Scott, re-opened its doors to the public on July 18, 1966.

Delighted to hear news of the purchase of adjoining site.
Also so delighted that Abbey is staying put and not moving. That would be crazy. Well done and am delighted we are back home and great credit due the staff who kept things rolling smoothly. Best wishes to all
